January 23: Nightshade

Ah, the Deadly Nightshade. Appropriately, in the language of flowers, its meaning is “Warning!” It can also convey the sentiment “Truth.” Maybe, as in “This is a True Warning!”

You’re already familiar with several members of the Nightshade family, and have probably ingested at least one of them recently. Potatoes, eggplants, tomatoes, and peppers are all part of the large Solanaceae family. They are about the only ones that are not poisonous.

The most famous of the toxic Nightshades is Belladonna, which causes death by paralysis of the respiratory system. Belladonna means “beautiful woman.” Legend has it that on certain nights of the year, the plant would take the form of a beautiful woman to lure men to their deaths.

Warning. Truth!
